But before we get into the fun things, It’s important to explain what LGBT history month is and why we have it.
But before I suggest some ways to honour this celebration, I thought it would be important to explain what queer history month is and why we have it.
In 1988 Margaret Thatcher’s conservative party were so horrified at the concept of school children being exposed to gay people that they set into place section 28, a ban on the promotion of homosexuality in schools, which ran until 2000 in Scotland and 2003 in England and Wales.
This led to a real blind spot in public knowledge around LGBTQ+ history in the UK with queer history month not being officially recognised until 2004 by the charity ‘Schools OUT UK’ coinciding with the abolition of section 28.
Now, here’s a few suggestions for what you can do to celebrate this queer history month in Glasgow!

Radical Glasgow Tour for Trans and Nonbinary people
Saturday, 21 February, 11:00-1:00pm
Radical Glasgow tours are hosting a walking tour around the city, revealing some hidden gems and providing a resource zine and a game of queer Glasgow bingo to participate in during the walk.
Please note, this event is for trans/nonbinary people only and all attendees must be over the age of 16.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum Tour
Saturday, 21 February, 12:00-1:00pm
Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum are hosting a curator-led tour, highlighting LGBTQ+ histories from their collection, examining how representations of queer culture have always existed within art and history.
The tour is free and no booking is required!

LGBTQ+ History Blue light event
Monday, 23 February, 9:00-1:00pm, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
A chance to celebrate pride, history and community with inputs from senior leaders, and colleagues who were pivotal during the AIDS pandemic, with comments on the challenges we are still facing today.
